In January 1848, Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. Later, in June of 48, a claim was staked in Tuolumne County by Benjamin F. Wood. This mining camp became known as Woods' Diggings and then as Woods' Crossing. It is now called Jamestown. One of the miners who came the following winter was Colonel George James. He brought supplies and champagne to share with everyone. Needless to say he made quite an impression on the local people, so much so that they re-named the town for him. Many know the community as Jimtown. After a problem in the town involving James, the miners changed the name to American Camp but the post office never changed the name so it remained officially as Jamestown.
